“I make work about things that go boom”

- Melissa Hampton, Artist | Owner

“There are hardly any exceptions to the rule that a person must pay dearly for the divine gift of the creative fire.”

"But what is passion, what are emotions? There is the source of fire, there is the fullness of energy. A man who is not on fire is nothing: he is ridiculous, he is two-dimensional."

"Conflicts create the fire of affects and emotions; and like every fire it has two aspects: that of burning and that of giving light."

- Quotes from Carl Jung

The Crucible of the Self: From Pressure to Expression

My work lives at the intersection of geological force and human identity. I am drawn to the "eruptive" moment—where pressure, whether in a volcano, a supernova, or a human soul, must give way to expression and release.

This process is deeply personal and informed by my own astrological makeup. I’m an Aries sun sign, and my relationship with the torch is a celebration of the cardinal fire archetype that I embody. It is the energy of initiation, sovereignty, and the courage to be bold and forthright. In my studio, fire is more than a tool—it is a collaborator that mirrors the Jungian journey of Individuation, where the conscious and unconscious become integrated. I use the torch to bring the 'magma' of the subconscious to the surface, transforming the hidden weight of experience into the visible 'gold flow' of true self-expression through 3 distinct pillars of inspiration:

The Cosmic Spark: Supernovas, Stars, and the Sovereign Self

My work, both in concept and process begins with an initiatory spark that transforms the quiet void into a moment of dynamic creation. I use high-karat gold to represent the "star-stuff" we carry within, capturing those radiant, indestructible parts of our identity that only emerge through the heat of experience. Each piece is a deliberate moment of creation through destruction, mirroring the cosmic truth that a star must first collapse for its gold to be scattered across the universe.

The Earthly Release: Volcanoes, Magma, and the Subconscious

If magma is the subconscious in motion—a heavy, hidden pressure demanding a vent—then my work celebrates its liberation. Through my signature Gold Flow process, I capture the moments when internal pressure becomes outward expression, freezing molten metal into a textured record of transformation. By working with the torch, gravity, and steel tools, I Melt Sculpt the surface of oxidized silver to create jewelry that resembles cooled lava: a material testament to a truth that has finally surfaced to solidify, be seen, and ignite connection.

The Psychic Bridge: Symbols, Arcs, and the Human Connection

Guided by the Jungian journey of Individuation, I use my artwork to explore the spiritual connection that occurs when we bring our 'shadow' into the light. The recurring 'V' Core cut-outs serve as visual transmitters, guiding golden arcs outward like modern signal waves or ancient gestures of prayer. These pieces function as wearable artifacts of the self, acting as a bridge between our private internal depths and the collective world. I invite the wearer to broadcast their inner truth—a signal for the integration of the self and a call for authentic engagement with others.
